It’s summertime here in my area in North America and the Northern hemisphere in general so those of you down in Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and other places that listen to the show, bear with me, I know it’s winter time where you are but we do need to address some things here. Think about what’s going on in your community and kind of apply the same kind of concepts but here where we are, we have kids involved in sports, we have a lot more kids out of school so they are out on the street and doing different activities, skateboarding, roller blading, riding their bikes. Are they using the proper safety equipment for the sports activity or the recreational activity? If they aren’t, they need to be. In this article over at the WebMD site that I found is talking about sports safety: helmets save heads. I love that article title; I think it’s a great headline.

This is a great article I think from Lincoln, Illinois and it’s from the Lincoln Courier.com. You know one of the things that I like about these types of articles is it’s a great way again for us to reach out into the community. Write a quick article like this and send it off to your local newspapers. Talk to your local radio station and ask them if you could maybe get on a phone interview with them or come in to the station and record a brief segment on something like not using second hand car seats, not buying car seats at yard sales.

Tip This Week --- Bariatric Patient Care
EMS providers like EMTs and paramedics often have to be resourceful and creative when it come to caring for obese patients. Because they are different from the standard patient, management of obese patients have become one of the complex challenges EMS providers might encounter.

Like any other patient, obese patients have right to expect professional and prompt emergency care, and providers have the obligation to deliver such care without risking their own health. Factors that should be taken into consideration include the availability of proper equipment and appropriate manpower, and the presence of protocols which provides the balance between providing patient needs and personnel safety.

Find out more on how to properly and carefully provide care for bariatric patients by following these links below.

I’ve wondered for a long time about why we still make ambulances in the same basic configuration as the old cadillac hearse style units of the 1960’s and ’70’s? Why not make a side loading ambulance to enable easier loading of the patient from whichever direction is safer for the EMTs and paramedics?
