Tip of the Week EMS Student and Educator Tips
Find out more about different learning styles and study tips from the panel of special guests in this episode of MedicCast. The panel includes

Greg Friese of EMSEducast.com (http://EMSEducast.com)

Rob Theriault of paramedictutor.wordpress.com

They talk about tips on how to balance one's study time and keep away from distractions like Facebook or Twitter and setting an attainable and realistic goal in planning for studying and more.

Be Aware of Learning Style

Most EMT students are regarded as adult learners, having to balance school with work and family. While some easily learn through listening in lectures, others need to visualize or have a tactile experience of the concept for them to fully understand and retain the information. Knowing a student's learning style increases class performance and effectivity.

For educators, they should facilitate activities that will appeal to students and go beyond the classical lectures or use of powerpoint slides. Awareness of learning styles will help in providing ideas on how to present topics in class.

Since social media are getting more popular, these should be extended as educational tools. Downloadable videos and podcasts will let students do more with their time while gaining extra knowledge.

Emergency medical technicians and paramedics often encounter unusual and difficult to diagnose situations. This is especially true when discussing drug and alcohol abuse. It is often very difficult to figure out what the true nature of the overdose is because of patient fears and deception. Sometimes the drug of choice is more unusual than illicit pharmaceuticals. People may turn to readily available plants in their own back yards.

This medication is administered in the hospital setting but it is important to understand some aspects of patients with acetaminophen overdoses. One of the items that Lisa lists below as a problem with the acetaminophen overdose treatment is the delay in treatment. EMS providers can help with that.
