Mean People At Higher Risk For Cardiac Illness

Do you guys have nasty people on your ambulance? Do you have patients that are not very pleasant to ride with to the hospital? How do you deal with that? Why is it important for you to understand some things about nasty people? Well, a recent study that was conducted in Italy, found that people who are considered unpleasant or nasty or mean, are more prone to heart attack and stroke. That the arteries, the walls of the arteries in these people are thicker than the non-nasty people and this may be because they maintain themselves at such high stress levels that they end up building a huge amount of enzymes in their system that cause the cardiac artery walls to thicken but if you’re more likely to have a stroke or a heart attack because of being a mean person, what happens when you get in the back of my ambulance and you’re still mean and nasty?

Many paramedic and EMT students are starting their new semesters of school right now. Because of that, I thought it might be a good idea to assemble a few tips for the students over the next few weeks. Don’t worry, if you are an experienced emergency medical services provider you’ll get something out of this, too!

Regenerating Cardiac Stem Cells and the Role of EMS

This is a news item about Smart stem cells regrowing, regenerating cardiac tissue. Now, this has been like the Holy Grail and this looks like we’re just one step closer to getting this taken care of and what does this mean for us? Does this mean that STEMI protocols are going away? Does this mean that we’re going to change the way we deal with cardiac illness? Well, not necessarily but what it does mean is that if our patients can grow back cardiac tissue and regenerate cardiac when they have signs of coronary artery disease and MI that has caused cardiac ischemia in a part of their heart.

Direct Transport to Appropriate Facility Better for MI Patients

A quick story about transporting that STEMI patient, that suspected STEMI or identified STEMI, cardiac- not cardiac arrest but heart attack patient, MI patient, to the appropriate facility. A recent look at cost effectiveness and studies has found that it would be much more effective for just a protocol that says EMS takes all STEMI and suspected STEMI patients to a cath lab and not adding cath lab facilities to every little hospital out there. Usually, this doesn’t seem to be that effective probably because they aren’t gonna be doing a to of catheterizations, they aren’t gonna have the staff on call 24/7 so you go to a local hospital after hours and it’s gonna take them 1 or 2 hours to get the cath lab staff in. You probably would have been better served to take that patient another hour down the road to the actual cath lab where they have everything set up and read to go and that patient will actually get into the cath lab and have the catheterization done much more quickly.

Compressions Only CPR and Ventilations plus Compressions CPR: Which Is More Effective?

A recent update that came out over at medical news today.com talking about 2 new studies released looking at the effectiveness of compression only bystander CPR. I get a lot of questions from listeners over time just checking out what’s the next update for CPR going to look like. What are we seeing, I heard we’re going to be doing compression only CPR and no ventilations. I got to be honest with you. I don’t see that happening, I’ve looked at the research. Bystander CPR, initial CPR for a patient who’s just collapsed is probably gonna be compression only and I stand into the health care arena. But overall, we still need to manage patient airways. We still need to appropriately ventilate patients and by appropriately, I mean not over ventilate them but we do need to get oxygen into their lungs so that it can be transferred to the rest of their body via the blood stream and our compressions are what are doing that. So we need to have some kind of a balance. health care, again i think is not gonna change hugely. We might have a larger compression to ventilation ratio, we may have increased scrutiny on over ventilation and understanding of what that does to our patients and negative outcomes but ultimately, this is really only talking about bystander compression only CPR.

Read more on Compressions Only CPR and Ventilations plus Compressions CPR: Which Is More Effective?…
