EMS Cardiac Arrest Management and Mega Code Student Tips

0

Many paramedic and EMT-I students dread upcoming cardiac “mega codes” or ACLS practical examinations.

BVM_bw_Closeup_smAs I’ve worked with these diligent EMS students, I find that they are often over whelmed by the many layers of information and skills that need to be implemented.

Cardiac Arrest Management – Step by Step Approach

Cardiac arrest management comes down to three key areas. When a student is able to break down the mega code process into three key steps, he or she will easily progress through even the most demanding ALS cardiac skills test.

Strong BLS Understanding

Paramedics and medics in the field must start their approach to cardiac arrest with the basics. Focusing on strong, fast, and deep compressions, limiting interruptions, early defibrillation, and appropriate BLS airway management techniques first is key.

ACLS EMS Algorithms and Mnemonics

Understanding and memorizing the various ACLS algorithms can seem daunting. The process is made much easier by frequent review and the use of mnemonic memory aids. There are many versions so find the one that fits best for you and use it to your advantage when the code comes along.

EMS Cardiac Arrest Team Oversight

In addition to everything else a medic has to do during a cardiac arrest, they also have to maintain that “10,000 foot view.” This means that an advanced life support provider needs to constantly step back an look at the big picture, reviewing common causes of certain rhythms and how to correct them, monitoring the quality of CPR, and determining patient movement and transport options.

Students and indeed all EMS providers must learn to take a mental break and review the situation in any potentially “high stress” situation.
