Listener Tim sent in an article link to me that was a bit alarming. It refers to an Australian study that showed that some pregnant women may be consuming alcohol despite being aware of the dangers to their unborn children. As many as 34% according to the survey. I have to wonder if those numbers translate to the U.S. pregnant population.

A rather shocking story caught my eye this week. It has to do with a Florida EMT/Firefighter who is suing an elderly patient for injuries suffered while arriving at the patient’s residence for a call for aid. The responder is saying that 18,000 dollars worth of injury was caused by the patient. More on this in the MedicCast News podcast.

This week on the MedicCast News I look into a story about some really extraordinary CPR performed by students from a Wyoming EMS program. They kept up perfusing CPR compressions for 55 minutes and the docs at their destination hospital counted their efforts in the saving of the patient! Good job guys (and to your instructor, too)!

I found this article on how EMS services in the Washington DC Metro area are using some proactive marketing techniques to solve their recruiting issues. I have always believed that to get good people you need to do just a few things:

  • Pay Better Than Everyone Else
  • Offer Extra Benefits
  • Have Supportive Management

What do you think?

What makes lawsuits so annoying in many cases is how easily they could be avoided by thinking ahead. I’m talking about developing good CYA (cover your ass) habits in the field. Call for help when you need it and double check you information are two ways to avoid getting yourself into trouble. One lawsuit deals with a woman on a cot tipping over and another looks at a patient who died on a transport to the wrong facility.

Finally a researcher has followed up with a study on the effects of iPods on pacemakers implanted in patients. About a year ago, a report came out that iPods posed a risk for patients with implanted pacemakers. Now an FDA follow-up study has found no effect on pacemakers using 4 different versions of the popular mp3 players.

Wrecks, wrecks, and more wrecks! Lots of ambulance involved MVAs in the news this week prompt me to devote an entire episode of the MedicCast News to the topic. We need to be really vigilant on the roads, people. Anything we can do to avoid an accident is better than getting injured or killed while dealing with someone else’s emergency. Check out the links to all of the stories I cover over at the MedicCast News Page at the Podcaster News Network.

I guess in an election year, the U. S. Congress has to be careful in which programs they cut. Since EMS funding is low on everybody’s spending list (except ours), that is one of the cuts that have been made. Time to get on the phone, email, letter writing list and get in touch with your representatives and senators. You can find more info on the cuts here.

With the bulk of the EMS services in the U.S. at least partially served by volunteers, it is always a challenge to find, recruit, and retain new members.  I found this online article posted on an Indiana newspaper’s web page that offers some public education about EMS in their community and at the same time offers the readers an opportunity to volunteer.  Good Stuff.
