MedicCast Episode 479

Good day and welcome to this week’s episode of the MedicCast. I’m your host, Jamie Davis the Podmedic and I’d like to welcome you to this week’s show. In this episode, we look at three segments recorded at EMS Today 2016 in Baltimore back at the end of February. We interview two of the EMS 10 Awardees about their innovative improvements on EMS care in their systems.

I also chat with JEMS Games team captain Jerry Brenner who got a team together and trained them to compete in the annual JEMS Games at EMS Today 2016 this year. All of these segments were recorded thanks to Physio-Control and their sponsorship of this program. We’ll have all three of those segments coming up in this special episode of the MedicCast.

EMS Tip of the Week: Solar Ambulance Fleets

RAA-logoFirst up this week is a look at what you can do to make your service’s ambulance fleet greener. No, I’m not talking about a new coat of paint. I’m talking about going to solar ambulance fleets in this EMS10 innovator award. Dan Fellows is the Fleet Manager of the Richmond Ambulance Authority. The story of RAA’s fleet development and strategy has been told many times and how it has evolved into a reliable, robust and mission ready set of vehicles. Dan Fellows is the architect of this success. Dan Fellows has been the architect of that success as he has applied sound management, leadership and innovation to the development of fleet services. His addition of solar panels to the entire fleet of ambulances created savings in fuel and maintenance costs for his system. Check it out.

Next up in our coverage of the EMS10 awardees is a look at what one medical director is doing to manage non-emergency EMS patients in his system using telemedicine resources. David Persse developed a unique, innovative, technology-based program in December 2014 – called ETHAN (Emergency Telehealth and Navigation Program) in the Houston Fire Dept that uses advanced telehealth technologies and community-based resources to reduce excessive primary care related 9-1-1 calls and get the patients to the correct medical appointment location or treatment facility. “ETHAN” utilizes all department response units, a central control console staffed by a physician and two-way Panasonic video and data computers to put the patient, control physician and crew in instant two-way contact to assess, divert and properly channel the patient to the right medical facility and release EMS resources to handle higher priority calls. Here is that segment with Dr. Persse.

Finally in this week’s coverage of the EMS Today attendees is a look at what one group of EMS providers did to prepare for the annual JEMS Games EMS patient care scenario competition. Jerry Brenner is a friend of mine on Facebook and I saw that he and his team were prepping to go down and compete against others in this amazing contest of EMS knowledge, skills, and critical thinking. Check out this segment with Jerry where he talks about what they did to prepare for the games this year.
