I hear a lot of backlash against the Affordable Care Act (ACA), commonly known as Obamacare but I don’t hear many in the healthcare space talking about the benefits to young people now getting insurance under the plan. The long term positive effects are potentially huge.
Young People Don’t Think They Need Insurance
While young adults don’t think they need insurance, the preventative benefits of managed care insurance programs would lead to longer, healthier lives for these individuals. By managing their modifiable risk factors early and offering them education and prevention opportunities, these young people could avoid the challenges that face people later in life.
What kind of challenges are we talking about here? You know them! The risks for things like diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, and stroke are greatly reduced if you can get a handle on the risk factors early.
Prevention And Wellness Through Managed Care
Modern managed healthcare plans offer opportunities to gain access to all sorts of health resources. These include things like smoking cessation programs, weight loss and management programs, exercise and activity support programs and many more. These programs are often staffed by nurses and other health professionals to provide answers to questions and to give concrete support and plans to improve health and wellness.
Ultimately, these programs do a great deal to prevent illness and disease making the strain on our nation’s healthcare and EMS systems much lighter. Keep this in mind the next time you look at the ACA or Obamacare and think it’s all a bad idea.
