Scene safety is going away, donating that old ambulance to the third world, EMS violence reporting and we’ll look at another new drug to some EMS and paramedic tool kits, Oxytocin. If that’s what you’re looking for, you found it, right here on this week’s episode of the MedicCast.

MedicCast Episode 366

Pregnancy

Good day and welcome to this week’s episode of the MedicCast. I’m your host, Jamie Davis the Podmedic and I’d like to welcome you to this week’s show. I’m bringing a full, information and news-packed episode to you this week. We’ll have several news items on changes and challenges to our ‘scene safety’ guidelines we’ve been using as a mantra for so many years. Then, after the EMS news, we’ll move over and take a look at another new EMS medication for some of you from the NREMT EMTP to Paramedic update from the NREMT with a review of Oxytocin. That’ll be coming up later in this week’s tip of the week.

Before we get to that though, please make sure you check out the links and additional information available for you over at the MedicCast blog at MedicCast.com/blog. There’s a show notes link at the top of the page. Click that link and it will take you right to the most recent episode and you can scroll down there to find any previous episode. There’s also a search box there for you on the right if you are looking for something in particular. Take some time and make sure you follow up on the information you get on the show and understand how it applies to your EMS practice and protocols.

Tip of the Week: Oxytocin EMS Medication Review

This week on the EMS tip of the week for EMTs and paramedics here on the MedicCast, we’ll look at another drug added to the paramedic’s tool kit in the latest NREMT guidelines and updates. I picked this up at my recent EMS paramedic update class from UMBC’s excellent refresher program. If you’re in or near Maryland, I highly recommend their con-ed classes. The instructors are knowledgable and informed about the topics and entertaining as well as educational. One of my recent instructors was a labor and delivery nurse specialist who came in to talk about childbirth and also some of our new drugs, including Oxytocin. So let’s do a review of this medication in the tip this week.
