Next up in the news we take a look at the vast pay disparities of EMS professionals across the United States. At a time when we are focused on the acts of bravery of first responders where EMTs, paramedics and other first responders rushed toward a developing dangerous situation rather than away from it, it is time for us to look at how we are compensated.
Vast Nationwide Pay Differences
In this article from the Salt Lake Tribune website, in Salt Lake City, Utah, they looked at the vast disparities in pay for EMS providers across the country. They also looked at recent cutbacks of large EMS agencies in cities across the country as budget cutbacks took effect.
I applaud the Salt Lake Tribune for putting out this article. It is a good hard look at how little we are compensated. They cite a report from JEMS magazine last year. It found that 28% of large municipality EMS agencies had hiring freezes, were not filling vacancies, and were engaging in no cost-of-living raises for the fourth straight year. All of this at a time when many EMTs and paramedics make less than city garbage collectors.
What’s Your EMS System Like?
I urge you to take a look at this article. It is a good look at emergency medical services across the country. It includes data from several surveys and government agencies on the numbers of EMS professionals, and where and how they work. See where you fit into the picture this article paints and let me know what you think. Shoot me an email to firstname.lastname@example.org.
I look forward to hearing from you.
