MedicCast Episode 337

epinephrine

Good day and welcome to this week’s episode of the MedicCast. I’m your host, Jamie Davis, the Podmedic and I’d like to welcome you to this week’s show. We have a great show for you this week including a news item that looks at a paramedic who came up with a rather novel way to fight drug abuse of prescription drugs. Check it out in this week’s news. Then, after today’s news items, we check out a medication review for EMS providers as we check in to the use and proper administration of epinephrine in the field. That, of course, follows up on our segment on allergic reactions we covered in last week’s episode. All of that is coming up next here on the MedicCast.

Before we get to that though, please make sure you check out the links and additional information available for you over at the MedicCast blog at MedicCast.com/blog. There’s a show notes link at the top of the page. Click that link and it will take you right to the most recent episode and you can scroll down there to find any previous episode. There’s also a search box there for you on the right if you are looking for something in particular. Take some time and make sure you follow up on the information you get on the show and understand how it applies to your EMS practice and protocols.

If you want to get back in touch with me, make sure you do so. You can email me at podmedic@mac.com. Shoot me an email with your comments and questions on the shows, or you can send me suggestions and interview ideas for future episodes. Either way, I work to respond back to every email that comes in and I’ll get back to you as well so keep those emails coming in. Also, if you’re an android user or iPhone or iPad owner, check out the brand new free MedicCast App. Get the free MedicCast app from the Google play store. Get the free MedicCast EMS app for iOS.

That’s enough contact info. We’ll get into this week’s news coming up next but please remember to support our sponsors and let them know you heard about them here on the MedicCast. It helps keep the show coming out to you each week and keeps the lights on here at the MedicCast studios. Take a moment and tell them thanks for supporting the show!

News:

Paramedic Invents Overdose Fighting Pill Bottle

NewPillBottle

New Pill Bottle Design

First off in the news this week is a paramedic who came up with a great idea to come back prescription drug abuse. An unnamed Las Vegas paramedic got together with a group of Brigham Young University engineering students to come up with a new type of prescription pill bottle.

Getting Rid of Short Paramedic Programs in South Africa

South African EMS is in the news this week with an article I found talking about challenges they are having with shortened and accelerated Paramedic courses putting out providers that are not adequately trained.

The Undervalued EMT and Paramedic

Finally in the news this week, a story I picked up written by Dr. Seth Hawkins who we’ve had here on the show before. Seth is a former EMS 10 innovator award winner and is a medical director in western North Carolina. He wrote an article recently, carried in the local newspaper and news site, talking about the undervalued EMS worker in that state.

Tip of the Week: Epinephrine EMS Med Review

Coming up in this week’s tip of the week is a medication review for EMS providers, both BLS and ALS EMS professionals, on the medication epinephrine. Last week on the show we looked at allergic reactions including anaphylaxis and following up on that this week we will be covering one of the treatments for allergic severe allergic reactions, among other things. Stay tuned for next week when we’ll look at some other treatments for allergic reactions, but for now, let’s get into this segment on epinephrine.
