It was EMS week so what did you do about it, stroke victims still delaying care, EMS systems call volume versus population numbers and I’ll bring you another in our series of interviews from EMS Today 2013 with our EMS 10 innovator awardees. If that’s what you’re looking for, you found it right here on this week’s episode of the MedicCast.

Good day and welcome to this week’s episode of the MedicCast. I’m your host, Jamie Davis, the Podmedic and I’d like to welcome you to this week’s show. What a show coming in today’s episode including a look at what you and other systems did to celebrate EMS Week last week. News:

It Was EMS Week – What’d You Do?

Let’s jump right in to the news this week and first off congratulate all of you on a successful EMS week celebration last week. I know many of you had gala celebrations, festivals, fairs and trips to exotic locations to show for it. Wait a minute. You say it came and went and nothing special happened?

Stroke Victims Are Delaying Care

So apparently, stroke victims are their own worst enemies. In a recent study, nearly 1/3 of them don’t call an ambulance when they should to get rapid treatment. Many think the symptoms will clear on their own or don’t want to be a “bother” to their caregivers and family.

Call Volume Up While Population Drops

Finally in the news this week, I return to revisit a news story I first covered about a year ago. Gary, Indiana was noticing something unusual. According to census data, their population was decreasing but when they looked at their volume of EMS calls, that didn’t seem to be the case as they seemed to be busier.

Tip of the Week: Dale Becker Improves Resuscitation Care

This week, I bring you another EMS 10 Innovator Awardee in an interview segment recorded in our podcast studio, sponsored by Physio-Control, at EMS Today 2013 in March. Dale Becker is from Howard County, Maryland, just down the road from me and he wanted to change the way his EMS crews focused on CPR during cardiac arrest resuscitation. With some education gleaned from the famed resuscitation academy, Dale brought his EMS system the information they needed to improve survival after cardiac arrest in his area.

Coming right up is that interview segment but first I’d like to thank EMS Today and Pennwell for having us in to cover their conference and get these great interviews with EMS leaders to share with you. Make sure you let them know you appreciate it as well.
