EMS training realism with moulage, following up on athletes and concussions, and responding to patient complaints, plus we are going to visit again with our good friend Lisa Booze from the Maryland Poison Center. If that’s what you’ve been looking for, well you found it, right here on the MedicCast.
MedicCast Episode 316
Well good day and welcome to this week’s episode of the MedicCast. I’m your host Jamie Davis, the Podmedic and I’d like to welcome all of you to the program this week. There’s a great show coming up for you. We’re going to be looking at creating training realism using makeup to make it more realistic to what we’ve seen the field. We’re going to look at how we respond to patient complaints both as individuals and as supervisors and managers, and then were going to revisit during the tip of the week with our good friend Lisa Booze with the Tox Tidbit from the Maryland Poison Center. All of that is coming up for you later on in this episode.
I do want to remind you to follow up on all of the information you’ll find in every episode over at the MedicCast website. That’s at MedicCast.com/blog. When you get over there, you’ll find links to the show notes right there at the top of the page. Click that link and you’ll find the most recent episode and you can scroll down find all of the previous episodes. Use that link to follow-up on the information from each show: the links to the news items, the additional resource links for each week’s Tip of the Week, and more. All of that is available for you over there at the MedicCast website and I urge you to follow up on that there.
If you want to get back in touch with me. I welcome your e-mails. Send those e-mails into Podmedic@Mac.com. I love to hear from you and I respond back to every e-mail that comes in. Keep those e-mails coming with your questions, your comments, or suggestions, and anything else you’d like to share with me. I love getting news links from people. It’s hard for me to judge what you want to hear about in an episode so when you send me news items to take a look at for future episodes, it’s a great opportunity for me to give back to you something you’re interested in. So keep those communications coming in, continue to be an active part of the MedicCast community.
There’ll be some more contact information coming up later on in this episode, but we should probably think about heading into this week’s news items. They’re coming right up in just a sec.
News:
Moulage for Extra Punch in EMS Training
This is a link on how to create moulage blisters large blood filled blisters for use in assessing and managing patients with chemical, electrical or other burns and things like that. Perhaps somebody that you need to manage and assess accurately. One of the things that we don’t do enough of when we train is utilize resources like moulage and makeup. When we have that live practice patient we’re assessing it makes them seem more realistic to us.
Telehealth Follow-up on Youth Concussions
One of the things that has always concerned me about EMS is how we are not involved in the aftermath of treating our patients. That’s “aftermath” in both a good and a negative way. We don’t know, often, what happens to our patients after we take them to the hospital. With this new article I thought I’d point out to you that there’s a lot of things going on out there innovating the ways we can help these patients recover.
Responding to EMS Patient Complaints
If you’ve worked long enough in EMS, there’s likely to be a situation that crops up where you or someone you work with has received a complaint from a patient or patient’s family member. How do you respond back to those complaints? Is there a way, if you’re a supervisor in charge of these other individuals, how do you manage that complaint without making the situation any worse off.

Detergent Pod Poisoning Review for EMS
Time now for this week’s tip of the week and I’m really excited to be joined again this week by our good friend Lisa Booze from the Maryland Poison Center. I got a chance to sit down over a phone call with her and get some information from her for this week’s Tox Tidbits segment, a little toxicology look on a specific item that Lisa brings to us. I’m looking forward to sharing you that recorded conversation with you here on the show.
