Changing Cardiac Arrest Dispatch

The Richmond Ambulance Authority is back in the news. They do good things down there and really keep up with what’s going on in advanced research in EMS. One of the things they are looking at is improving the time it takes 911 callers to get to chest compressions on a cardiac arrest call.

EMT Driver Charged in Coworker’s Death

Next up in the news this week is a sad story about a line of duty death in South Carolina. An emergency medical technician by the name of Belinda Gail Rivers was laid to rest in her funeral on September 28. Sadly enough her driver or coworker who was driving the ambulance the night she died has been charged with misdemeanor death related to the motor vehicle accident in this particular situation. They had just dropped a patient off at the hospital and were headed back to their station.

Medicare Zaps Hospital Re-admissions

Finally this past Monday on October 1 guess what happened folks? Medicare changed the way they’re going to reimburse hospitals when patients are readmitted for certain diseases. This is for readmissions within 30 days. Initially this is going to be limited to just a few different diagnoses.

Emergency Medical Services Diltiazem Review

Time now for this week’s tip of the week. We’re going to review the medication diltiazem this week. We’ve been looking at antiarrhythmic drugs over the last few weeks primarily focusing on amiodarone, lidocaine and treating ventricular arrhythmias. What about those confounded atrial arrhythmias like atrial fibrillation or atrial flutter? Well guess what folks, we’ve got a drug for you. Let’s go ahead and take a look at Bill Tai has them or the brand name Cardizem.
