Copying Israeli EMS
Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. I have heard that many times and I guess that goes for EMS imitation as well. I have a great article here that is an interview with the Bulgarian health minister and she is getting ready to go with a delegation from Bulgaria to head over and meet with health ministers from Israel. One of their goals is to bring some facets of the Israeli EMS system back to their country and provide better emergency care for their people.
Drug Swap-outs & Shortages
We talked a few weeks ago on the show about drug shortages causing problems and paramedics having to give expired medications in some cases. Well, there are some other things going on with these medication shortages. Medication errors are rising due to unfamiliarity with the new meds being swapped out for the shortage medications.
High Call Volume, Slow Response
Finally in the news this week, in Sedgwick County Kansas they are having their own budgetary problems. Officials there are concerned that there will be increased call times with fewer personnel allowed for in their budget. This is one of those common EMS problems talked about in the past and I’m sure we’ll be talking about it again in the future.

Emergency Medical Services Amiodarone Review
In this episode we’ll get back in the swing of things with our regular medication reviews. This week, let’s look at the medication Amiodarone. Amiodarone is an anti-arrhythmic medication used to treat both ventricular and atrial dysrhythmias. It is a baseline medication in advanced cardiac life support (ACLS) used to treat cardiac arrest patients in ventricular fibrillation or pulseless ventricular tachycardia refractory to defibrillation. It may also be useful in treating atrial fibrillation or flutter as well as wide complex tachycardias not responding to electrical cardioversion.
