Hurricane licenses, evacuating the elderly, the West Nile virus and we’re going to take a special look at the West Nile virus in a special interview segment with our good friends at the This Week in Virology podcast. All that and more, coming up in this episode of the MedicCast.
MedicCast Episode 298
Good day and welcome to this week’s episode of the MedicCast. We have a great show coming up for you with our news items this week affecting first responders and emergency preparedness and we’ll be talking about that. Yes, it’s the recent hurricane.
We will also be following up with some information on another concern that was going on before the hurricane hit, the West Nile virus outbreak. How serious is it? I’ll be talking about that in the news and will be following up all of that with a special interview segment on the West Nile Virus and I hope you stick around for that about halfway through the show.
I do want to remind you to head over and check out links to everything we discussed in this and every other episode over at the MedicCast website. You can find it at MedicCast.com/blog. Over there you’ll find a link for the show notes at the top of the page. Click that link and it will take you back to most recent episode and you can scroll down there to find previous episodes.
We’ll have some contact information later on in the show but if you do have an e-mail go ahead and shoot those e-mails out to podmedic@Mac.com and of course you can always get in touch with me on social media sites under the handle podmedic.

You can do that and the say thanks to them for sponsoring our shows. Also, use the Promo Code FP50 at EMSWorldExpo.com when you check out to get free exhibit hall access passes for the conference.
Emergency Hurricane Licenses
The first item in the news this week has to do with the hurricanes striking the central Gulf Coast of the United States. Hurricane Isaac has already been there by the time you’ve heard this and perhaps its remnants are here in the Northeast and catching some of the leftover rain from that event. There are things that happened in emergency services that are important to note and understand how mutual aid agreements work and how states can handle emergency situations, disaster situations.
Governor Bobby Jindal suspends EMS Licensing requirement during storm response.
Acadian Ambulance Helps Evacuation
Next up in the news our good friends at Acadian ambulance have been working hard in the early days before the storm last week getting ready for this hurricane to strike. They were working hard getting people at risk transported. This included nursing home patients, hospital patients, elderly patients who needed an ambulance or wheelchair van transport out of danger areas to areas where there was safe shelter or care.
The West Nile Blues
Wrapping up the news this week is a story on the West Nile Virus. Now we’ve heard a lot of scuttlebutt about the West Nile Virus in recent weeks saying it’s the worst or the most horrible outbreak we’ve ever had since West Nile Virus first showed up in the U.S. in 1999. They catalog the number of deaths, the widespread nature of the outbreak and everything else in this CNN article.

West Nile Virus Interview with TWiV.tv Hosts
Next up in this episode is a very special interview segment with Dr. Vincent Racaniello and Dr. Dickson Descommier. They are the co-hosts of This Week in Virology which is one of the podcasts over at the ProMed Network site, so you can find over there along with the MedicCast and the other shows you might be already listening to. It is a great program they have.
They also have other programs on parasitism and also on one microbiology so if you’re interested in this topic they really know what they’re talking about. They are both professors in microbiology and virology at Columbia University in New York City and know what they’re talking about. We are also joined on this call by Rick Russotti from the Mitigation Journal Podcast to bring his preparedness and planning expertise into the ring.
