Child Recognized for Calling 911 After Mom Collapses

This news story that I came across is about an amazing 6-year old child who called 911 after his mother collapsed on the floor due to a seizure attack. In the morning of November 28th,  Julie D’Onofrio was at home preparing breakfast when she had a seizure and collapsed and collapsed in her pantry. She was with her two children, a 1-year old on a high chair and then 6-years old James who called 911 after seeing his mom fall on the floor. An ambulance was dispatched 90 seconds after call while the dispatcher stayed on the phone with James giving him instructions on what else he could do and to confirm if the patient was still breathing. Providers arrived at their home, found the mother unconscious and still breathing and took over the care of the family.

These kind of stories just goes to show that it is never too early to educate children on what can be done during emergency situations. In the case of this family, their mother has given James basic instructions in calling emergency but gives most of the credit to his school for his actions during the emergency. Teaching school aged children or as soon as a child is able to communicate and use a phone on how to dial 911 is certainly a need because we will never know when something like this will happen where the only adult in charge of looking over a child is the one in need of help.

Because of his actions, James will be recognized as a hero and will get to meet the dispatcher who received his call. Kudos to this young man.
