Tip This Week — Patient Airway Management
Before anything else, establishment of a patent airway is the top priority when dealing with patients with multiple problems. A good knowledge of anatomy and physiology is the starting point for airway management. The team approach is very important when dealing with a potentially difficult airway. The leader of the team should be established, and team coordination under his guidance should be expected.
There are different devices or equipment that can be used to open up the airway, some of them are the supraglottic airway devices and combitubes.
In the process of intubation, EMS providers should always have a back up plan in case the intubation fails and solutions should be prepared in advance.
For practical reason, airway management has been divided into four (4) algorithms.
- Main algorithm
- Crash algorithm
- Difficult airway algorithm
- Failed airway algorithm
For more details on the airway algorithms and airway management, follow the links below.
