Tip This Week — Heat Related Emergencies

Summer is fast approaching so emergency medicine providers should be ready to respond to emergencies related to temperature spikes like heat stroke, heat cramps and heat exhaustion.

Heat stroke occurs when the body becomes unable to control its temperature. The body’s temperature rises rapidly, the sweating mechanism fails, and the body is unable to cool down. Body temperature may rise to 106°F or higher within 10-15 minutes. Heat stroke can cause death or permanent disability if emergency treatment is not given.

Apart from rapid increase in body temperature, other symptoms include rapid, strong pulse, throbbing headache, dizziness, nausea, and confusion.

To increase the chances of a person having a heat stroke, the patient- if able, or another person should immediate call for help and while waiting for emergency responders should make attempts to cool the person’s temperature by taking them out of direct sunlight and take them to a cool place, immersing or spraying the patient with cool water.
