Tip This Week — EpiPens and Epinephrine Reviewed
Anaphylaxis is a sudden, severe allergic reaction that is life-threatening. Tissues get inflamed, including the airway, which impedes the entrance of oxygen. Other symptoms include hives, skin redness, high pitched breathing sounds, palpitations, nasal congestion and difficulty breathing.
Since anaphylactic reactions occur suddenly, a fast acting medication to reverse the life-threatening effects should be given. Epinephrine is an emergency drug that acts quickly to improve breathing, stimulate the heart and reverse hives and swelling around the face and lips. This medication is used in emergencies to treat potentially dangerous allergic reactions to insect stings or bites, foods, drugs or other substances.
EMS providers should know the proper administration, interactions, precautions and most importantly, their local EMS protocols for the use of this medication. Follow the links below to know more about this medication.
