Tip This Week — AEDs and Sudden Cardiac Arrest
Special Interview Segments from the floor at EMS Today!
In this very special episode of the MedicCast, I was joined by a wonderful panel of EMS guests to talk about two topics surrounding sudden cardiac arrest. We discusses sudden cardiac arrest and public AED access first and then follow up with a discussion of some of the reasons for the initiatives to add therapeutic hypothermia to our patient care tool box in the back of the ambulance.
On the show, I had James Weber, an associate member of the Sudden Cardiac Arrest Association and a long time friend of the MedicCast. James is active in his community as a paramedic in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania and works with others to provide more access to AEDs in this rural community in the southeastern part of the state. One of the initiatives he discussed was a program that distributed AEDs within the Amish community.
Also, joining us, at long last, is Amy Turley. Amy is a paramedic in the Seattle, Washington region but is probably most well known for developing the Turley Backboard Pad, an innovative solution for padding the pressure points of a boarded EMS patient as well as a providing a tool for both warming or cooling a patient. Amy talks about the differences between the TRAUMA TRIAD of DEATH and the therapeutic use of hypothermia in cardiac arrest and stroke patients.
Finally, Mary Newman is representing the Sudden Cardiac Arrest Foundation, another organization focusing on survivor stories and providing resources for research and media about sudden cardiac arrest. Mary is also on the JEMS editorial board.
