Tip This Week — Lisa Booze Segment on Street Drug Contaminants

Emergency responders often see patients who have used street drugs like heroin and cocaine but don’t always think about what other drugs or substances that have been mixed in with them. These contaminants are usually added to dilute the drug or to extend the “high”. These may or may not change the appearance and taste of the drug and may prove difficult for the user or paramedic to immediately identify the contaminants.

For providers attending to patients on street drugs who are presenting unusual signs and symptoms, it would be advisable to coordinate with their local poison centers so they could project what other drugs may have been added. This way, the right emergency treatment or drug antagonist may be given.
