Tip of the Week Ultrasound for EMS with Brian Dunnigan
Ultrasonography is one of the most commonly used tools for assessing patients in a facility setting and has been shown to reduce morbidity and mortality in critically ill patients.
The use of ultrasound technology in the pre-hospital setting has the potential to improve trauma, cardiac and obstetric care. Being able to perform the diagnostic procedure even before reaching the hospital saves precious time for the patient. As of now, it is only accessible in the hospitals in most areas but recent technological advances have made hand held ultrasound devices available in helicopter emergency medical services (HEMS) and ground ambulances.
Several research projects on HEMS ultrasound and ground EMS ultrasound are ongoing in the United States and countries across Europe. If ever made possible, some of the applications of pre-hospital ultrasound include detection of free intra-abdominal fluid on trauma patients, cardiac visualization of patients in shock state, fetal monitoring and evaluation, early detection of pneumothorax and early evaluation of cardiac arrest.
