More Tips to Pass the NREMT Exam (part two)
Yesterday I started with a look at studying for the NREMT Exams. Tomorrow, check back for my final section on getting ready the day before and the day of the NREMT test.
Today, I want to look at how to assemble a methodical study program to prepare for the test.
Here’s a sample NREMT Exam study plan:
- Take the number of days left until you take the test.
- Subtract one from that number since you are going to rest up that day before the test and not study.
- Divide the number of test questions you have to work with by the number of days you have to study and that is the number of questions you must answer and review each day.
Here’s how it will work:
- You have 20 days until you test. That means you have 19 days to study (20 – 1 = 19)
- You have 1500 test questions to review.
- Take 1500 and divide it by 19 (1500/19 = 78.9 )Â You need to do 79 questions a day.
Day One
Take the first 79 questions and answer them.
Grade your answers. (Don’t worry about the percentage right or wrong right now, this is studying.)
After you have graded your answers – go back and review every question right and wrong. Ask yourself these questions as you go:
- Do you understand why you got the answer right or wrong?
- If you guessed and got it right, do you understand now how to pick out the correct answer?
- Does the rationale for the answer make sense to you?
- On the answers you got wrong, do you know what in the wording of the question or answer tricked you into picking the wrong answer?
- As you re-read the question, is it easier to pick out the single part that points to what it is asking you?
Once you’ve done this, set it aside for the day.
Day Two
Re-take the 79 questions from Day 1 and grade your answers.
Did you do better or worse? Either way set that one aside and move on to the new set of 79 Questions.
Repeat the steps from Day One and grade and review your next set of answers using your rationales and question review.
Review the questions you got wrong from the second try on day one’s questions. Try to pick out the new mistakes in interpreting the question.
Set them aside.
Day Three
Retake the 79 questions from Day Two and grade your answers
Repeat the steps from Day Two, and so on, etc.
The last practice day
Take the day’s test again before you stop and review it right away. You are going to take the next day off before the test so you won’t carry over the test to the next day like you did before.
Learn How to Read The Questions
The trick each day is to learn your patterns for getting questions right or wrong. Try to pick out the things that trip you up and learn to watch out for them. You may discover that you need to review a particular area of your studies but most of this is about test taking and not the learned material itself.
By the time you are done, you will have worked through the questions twice, and seen your answers improve as you’ve gone along. You will have reviewed 3,000 questions total and should be really prepared for the test.
Check back in tomorrow for more testing and preparation tips for the NREMT exam.
