Tips to Pass the NREMT Exam (part one)
Listener Jacob sent in this question by email and I thought it deserved an answer put out for all of the listeners and readers of the MedicCast.
I have already taken the NREMT twice, and its been about 5 months since I took my class, I am taking the NREMT one more time in about a week or so and I’m really freakin out. I don’t know anyone that’s taking National and I don’t know anyone that is studying to be an EMT I was wondering if you could help me find someone to study with…or if there was a way for me to put my info out on your podcast and maybe get some help…thank you!
Here’s some of what I sent back to Jacob with my tips and recommendations for any of you who are preparing to take your NREMT test.
Taking the NREMT Test
My first recommendation is to calm down and approach the test systematically just like you would a critical patient.
Second, if you haven’t already done so, get a hold of a couple of the NREMT practice test books available from somewhere like amazon.com. The biggest key to passing the NREMT test is familiarity with reading and answering test questions in the style the NREMT test uses.
Many surveys have found that those who take and review over 1,000 test questions prior to testing, do the best on the test. If you haven’t done this, then that is your next step. Get the practice questions, break them down into manageable portions based on when you test and work through them.
This means you answer the questions, check your answers, and then go back and review each and every question, right or wrong until you know why you got it right or why you got it wrong. Then give yourself a day or so and go back and take the questions again.
Did you get a better score? If not, then go through and work on the rationales again until they make sense to you.
(Check back in tomorrow for a sample NREMT study plan and more on preparing for the day of the NREMT Exam)

If you are looking for additional study aids, sign up for the MedicCast Extra and use the study tools there to review specific treatments, medications, and skills that you find a need to study some more. It’s a bargain at just $24.95 for 30 days of access.
