Tip of the Week: Vital Signs Review

EMT and paramedic students learn many assessment techniques and tips along the course of their studies. Key among them all is the ability to assess vital signs, interpret the resulting values, and determine a course of treatment enroute to the hospital.

The ability to take a pulse, tricks to count respirations, read a blood pressure, and when to include alternate signs like pain, pulse ox, and temperature is key to making a good EMT or medic. Learn to use these basic medical skills and add them to your assessment and diagnosis of a patient and you will save lives as an EMS provider.

Whether you are a brand new EMS student or an EMT or paramedic on the job in an ambulance for years, it is always good to review your skills and take the time to watch someone else’s tricks of the trade. We all have those patients that stump us, the ones that we end up having to bring out a technique we haven’t used for a long time. These are the instances where continuing education comes into play.

You might be reading journal articles, attending a class, or listening to podcasts. It doesn’t matter how you review your basic skills and learn new ones. Take that time seriously.

Take this time seriously and review the information in the show this week. Review your basic vital signs skills and knowledge using the links below and become a better EMS practioner.
