Wrecks, wrecks, and more wrecks! Lots of ambulance involved MVAs in the news this week prompt me to devote an entire episode of the MedicCast News to the topic. We need to be really vigilant on the roads, people. Anything we can do to avoid an accident is better than getting injured or killed while dealing with someone else’s emergency. Check out the links to all of the stories I cover over at the MedicCast News Page at the Podcaster News Network.

This weekend is the second anniversary of the MedicCast podcast.  We will be looking back and looking forward to see where the MedicCast is headed.  Along with all of the celebration on the show, we will also be giving away some great prizes to the listeners.

Who do we have to thank for that?  Alliance Medical (AllMed.net) that’s who.

allmed-catalog.jpg

Here’s a short list of the items that Dan White at AllMed.net sent in to give away to the listeners this weekend.  Check out the links below to see items at Allmed that are similar to the ones we’re giving away:

A Reflective Safety Vest in Orange

Red Soft-sided Small First Aid Bag

Red Multi Pocket Fanny Pack with Reflective Trim

EMI Multi-Purpose Rescue Shears w/ Belt Pouch

EMI CPR Barrier Shield Pouch with Airway Barrier, Latex Gloves

Two Blood Pressure Cuffs (Adult)

And a Stethoscope

Plus a few T-Shirts and MedicCast Polycarbonate Water Bottles from the MedicCast Store (store.MedicCast.com)

How do you get in the running?  You need to be on the free email newsletter list!

That’s it.  Just sign up before Midnight Saturday Night, February 2, 2008.  We’ll be choosing the winners from the list on Sunday while recording the show.

12lead.jpgA recent study from the New England Journal of Medicine compared coronary artery bypass graft surgery to the placement of drug coated stents.

Read the article about it here.

There was a lot of hope that the newer drug coated stents would provide a better and safer alternative to cracking the chest and performing a CABG.  However, the newest study seems to indicate that the outcomes for a traditional bypass are still better than with stent placement.

Does this effect us in the field?  Not really, but it is important to understand that this does not replace the need to get patients with suspected MIs to the nearest catheter lab or cardiac specialty center.  The areas of blockage still need to be imaged so that the number and locations of CABGs can be determined.

It’s always a good idea to maintain an understanding of current cardiac treatment effects since we often see people in the field with complications from these treatments as well as those with new onset of infarctions.

laptopscrubsitunes.jpgGreat news for one of my other podcasts!

The Nursing Show is listed as a “New and Notable” medical podcast over at the iTunes store’s Medical Podcast Section.  If you are a nurse or know of a nurse who might be interested in the Nursing Show — point them in that direction.

It can be found at www.nursingshow.com.

If you use iTunes and listen to the Nursing Show you can leave a comment or review on iTunes when you click on the iTunes subscribe button below:

itunesnew.jpg click here if you use iTunes to leave a review.
It will take you right to the Nursing Show page on iTunes.  You can write a review of the show and help others find the podcast there.

Hi Jamie,

I got this email from listener David.  He wanted to recommend another EMS blog to me and the other listeners of the MedicCast.  It’s a good one.  Check it out.

———————

I was listening to episode 102 about educating patients about calling 911 this morning, and thought I would point you in the direct of this story I read on the Blog — Other People’s Emergencies: random thoughts of an urban paramedic.  The blog itself is an excellent blog about EMS, written by a Boston EMS paramedic.

I would highly recommend the blog to anyone, involved with EMS or not. From reading this article it seems like a good program to educate patients about the proper use of when to call for an ambulance and it has been stopped?  I haven’t been able to keep up with medicCast episodes lately so I am not sure if you have covered this blog before?

In the event this is a new,  the blog was featured in the Boston Globe a few Sundays ago and I included the link for some more information.

David

Thanks for the link, David.

I guess in an election year, the U. S. Congress has to be careful in which programs they cut. Since EMS funding is low on everybody’s spending list (except ours), that is one of the cuts that have been made. Time to get on the phone, email, letter writing list and get in touch with your representatives and senators. You can find more info on the cuts here.

EMSAmbo.jpgThe National EMS Education Standards draft is available for review and the first round of comments have been submitted. The new standards are projected to be published by August 2009. This is part of a continuing effort to create higher national recommended standards for EMS education across the country.

The effort, funded by a cooperative agreement among National Association of EMS Educators (NAEMSE), the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), and the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), represents the next step in implementing the EMS Education Agenda for the Future: A Systems Approach.

Visit the project web site at http://www.nemsed.org to view and download the draft standards.
