Motorized Vehicles and Pediatric Trauma
Deaths from ATV accidents have increased 40 percent in recent years according to a report at Medical News Today. This has been prompting state legislators in the U.S. to tighten regulations governing ATV’s. Some experts in the article, however, warn that ATV’s account for less than half of the reported injuries and that other “motorized toys” are more likely to be responsible.
These other “motorized toys” include go-karts, dune buggies, motorized scooters, and more! Check out the article and talk to your local youth organizations about use of proper safety equipment. Use your visibility in the community to prevent these easily preventable injuries.
- Children should not ride without adult supervision
- Helmets should always be worn
- Seatbelts, if available, should be used
- Parents should not allow tinkering with motors to increase performance or speed
- Children should not ride these vehicles on or near the roadway
- Children should ride on known paths or courses to avoid surprise obstacles

Comments on Motorized Vehicles and Pediatric Trauma
You know, We’ve all known this for years but didn’t really want to talk about it because mot of us ride them ourselves. My oldest son wants a four-wheeler so bad that he can almost tast it, but I refuse to get him one. I would come much closer to buying him one of the go-karts with the full roll cage and five point harness. They are actually cheaper and most have two seats (both with harnesses).
My friends dad was in an atv accident recently and was hurt pretty bad…although I know they’re dangerous I really want to go atving at least once…but I think they need to be sold with better protection in mind. Like helmets and maybe basic body gear?
