New South Wales Ambulance in Australia has plans to increase the number of their special bariatric transport units. These units include lifts to assist in loading either stretchers or wheelchairs. The number of calls to which they respond has more than doubled since the first unit was put in service three years ago.

Here’s the story.

My ambulance service operates a bariatric unit of which I am a crew member of once a week (AT LEAST)! Our average pt’s wt in this unit is approx. 500 lbs. +. We normally have to assemble the ramps and the power winch for easier loading. It seems that the number of these pt’s has increased year after year requiring more of these types of ambulances to be put into service around our region. I can relate to this article and attest to the eqipment making this particular part of the job alittle bit easier and safer not just for EMS workers but also our pt’s.
