The Medic Alert Foundation, best known for their Medic Alert bracelets and pendants have come up with a unique way for a patient to carry around their valuable patient records for emergencies. The E-Health Key is a USB thumb drive with secured patient records accessable by password that can be used by providers in case of an emergency. If the patient themselves are not able to relay the password, medical professionals manning the foundation’s phones can relay the vital information via voice or fax transmission. Check out this sneak peak video from Brian Shockley at Medic Alert. Dont’ forget to check back in to download the latest MedicCast Podcast this weekend. Episode 22 will feature an interview with Brian that discusses this and other vital information available to EMS providers via the Medic Alert system. Peter Canning, in his Street Watch: Notes of a Paramedic blog posts some great information about pain management policies changing for the treatment of abdominal pain. While I have had some difficulty getting the ok from medical command to go ahead with Morphine, the trend is clearly going that way. Check out his entry on the subject HERE. He backs up his statements as always with sound research and reasoning. A good read. Jamie, ——————- Don’t forget the PodTrac Survey, help out the show. June 26, 2006 @ 2:02 am

Researchers in Finland found that of 800 persons in their study on work related stress, those who reported being unable to relax on the weekends were more likely to present with symptoms that point to higher risk of a cardiovascular event like MI and stroke. The risk of death was almost three times that of workers who could relax and get away from work over the weekend. I think we should all post a copy of this article for our boss to read. I report on this and other EMS news in the most recent episode of the MedicCast News at the Podcaster News Network. Jamie, June 19, 2006 @ 9:30 pm

A Delaware paramedic supervisor has landed himself in some hot water with a comment recorded over a phone machine. In what has to be the bone head move of the month, the un-named paramedic called a Newcastle county Delaware councilman and left a message containing ethnic slurs on the voicemail there. The issue apparently started when the councilman made an issue in a newspaper interview about the lack of minorities in the county ems units. The supervisor called to talk to the councilman about the issue and left a message and then continued a conversation with a co-worker without knowing the voicemail was still recording. Du-oh! Take it from me, the Podmedic. Always, always assume the mic is live! I report on this and other EMS news in the most recent episode of the MedicCast News at the Podcaster News Network. Just wanted to let you all know that I haven’t fallen off the face of the earth over the last few days. With my kids having their first full week home from school for summer vacation, I have been running ragged in Mr. Mom mode. Lots of EMS news though this week so stay tuned for a MedicCast News update at the Podcaster News Network either tomorrow or Friday. Took my BLS instructor’s update last night to bring me up to speed on the changes. As you all probably know, I’ve been tracking the new AHA guidlines pretty closely for months so there were no surprises. However, I did find out that they have done away with the Heartsaver (layperson) written test. Everything is all about skills and hands on practice and reducing written and book time. I’ll talk more about some of the info I got from that class this weekend on the MedicCast. Working on an interview with Brain Shockley from the MedicAlert Foundation.
I’ll podcast at you soon! Until then, Scene Safety/BSI! Jamie, June 12, 2006 @ 12:26 am

I found an article at Medical News Today’s site that discusses treatments for non-emergent insect bites and stings. It also focuses on prevention of these summer environmental hazards, too. Print this out or send the link to this to your friends with kids. Stay tuned for the next MedicCast. Lots of news this weekend. I look at heat related emergencies for Techniques and Treatments Check it out!
